Stenting & Shielding Hernia System – Second Generation of Dynamic Regenerative Scaffolds

Prof. Giuseppe Amato
Device Name

Stenting & Shielding Hernia System

The second-generation dynamic regenerative scaffold for abdominal hernia surgery.

Clinical Problem Addressed

The main cause of hernia protrusion is the degeneration of the abdominal wall tissues. However, traditional prostheses for hernia repair only provide mechanical reinforcement of the abdominal wall, without regenerating it. Notwithstanding the dynamic nature of the abdominal wall, hernia prostheses are static and passive. This concept of cure and these prostheses are often associated with postoperative pain, stiffness, infections, recurrences, and poor functional quality of the biologic response.

Proposed Solution

The S&S Hernia System represents the technological evolution of the dynamic regenerative scaffold concept: a three-dimensional, self-expanding device that can be implanted within seconds, without tissue dissection or surgical trauma.

Thanks to its bioactive architecture and stimulation of tissue growth factors, it promotes regeneration of the typical components of the abdominal wall (muscle, collagen, vessels, nerves), ensuring a stable and physiological reconstruction.

It combines two synergistic functions: stenting (dynamic obliteration of the hernia defect) and shielding (protection and reinforcement of the abdominal wall).

Project Status

The device has already successfully passed preclinical testing in a porcine model, demonstrating safety, tissue integration, and a superior regenerative biological response. It is currently commercially not available but regulatory procedures for clinical use in humans are ongoing.

It is currently undergoing regulatory procedures for clinical use in humans.
